Fashion trends always alter! We keep up with the latest trend by spotting what our favorite celebrities are wearing through TV shows and movies. Understanding the older trends can tell you the historical facts about your favorite outfit. If we talk about apparel penetrating certain cultural moment is without a doubt the onesie.
Onesies basically are adult jumpsuits; also known as pyjamas. This apparel has an interesting history. Dates back than you could ever think, i.e. in the 17th century, the clothing trend introduced to Britain was the pyjama. It was a short-lived trend that returned back in the later part of the 1800s. As time rolled over, many clothing traders started promoting tops and bottoms collectively. These set of apparel weren’t onesies but you can say the early edition of it. Many people started following the trend of lounge-were and by the end of 1930s sleepwear became the most popular clothing trend. Moreover, lots of men started adapting pyjamas as elegant evening wear.
Revealing Winston Churchill wearing a onesie was a huge game changer in the history of men’s onesie. It was considered to be the most comfortable outfit for men. Though it didn’t seem to be any majorly important thing it completely changed the way people looked at the onesies.
Furthermore, “Siren Suit” was one of the earlier fashion trends of the onesie. This one-piece garment was basically designed in the way that it covered the entire body and became the best suitable option to use in the air-raid shelters. Siren Suit was used to address the problems attributed to warmth and modesty that turned up in the UK during night-time air raids during World War II. The suits were specifically designed in the same style that of boiler-suits that were primarily worn by mechanics, bricklayers, and other similar workers.
Another edition of onesies was the “Union Suit” which was more or less a long-underwear garment that was made up of only one piece and was similar to what we today say the onesie. This suit was designed in Utica, a city in Mohawk Valley, Oneida County, New York, United States. The very first piece of suite that was designed during the 19th century was ladies onesie. It was an alternative option to the garments that were most worn during that time. It was further used throughout North America. And, as the generation entered into the 20th century, the popularity of union suit faded away and eventually was replaced by the two-piece long underwear.
As read above, Churchill was the one who endorsed the onesie. Despite the fact, this outfit didn’t take off with the adults instantly. Most commonly onesies were now used by women to keep their unborn babies warm. By 1950, infant onesie started getting more and more popular with women with baby boom who wanted to keep their children comfortable and warm, in colder weather.
Eventually in the early 1970s onesies returned back with a children’s book which was written by Geoffrey Hoyle. In the year it was predicted that patterns of this outfit will change, and a jumpsuit style outfit will be worn by everyone. And today, onesies are carried by everyone; whether men or women. As loungewear, this trendy style of suit is considered to be the most comfortable and warm. In addition, many celebrities were been noticed and photographed wearing onesies as a sign of fashionable and comfortable outfit. We all know Brad Pitt; one of the renowned Hollywood actor who was also spotted wearing a onesie for men with different colors and pattern.
The modern trend of adult onesie was at first set off at the beginning of 1998 by Jumpin Jammerz – a company that manufactured lounge-wear for both men and women. Eventually, onesie created by this company become the most popular and fast-selling apparel not only in the United Kingdom but also in America. And as 2007 rolled over, the Full body onesie for adult become the most popular thing amongst celebrities. By 2008, the design of onesies created by Jumpin Jammerz was replicated by many imitators that added to the already fashionable trend. And still, the “rebel apparel onesie” is nevertheless popular amongst men, women, and children and have always stood the test of time like quite a few fashion trends have.
