Motherhood brings a lot of pleasure and responsibilities at the same time. It is truly a wonderful experience but sometimes can be messy and exhausting. As a new mother I often used to think how my mother managed everything so nicely.
Starting from performing daily household works to taking care of children we mothers have a lot in our to-do list everyday for which we often forget ourselves. Even 5 minutes on the mat can freshen up our mind and soul but managing 5 minutes becomes difficult.
After being a mother, those long 2 hours of yoga sessions seem to be a dream to me and I am sure a lot of you have the same story. It has become a challenge to take out time for a small yoga session.
So as a mother, I realized that I can only carry out my yoga sessions if I involve my child in it. Today my daughter and I practice yoga on a regular basis and we love it. Here are some tips for the new mothers who can inspire their children to make yoga a habit.
1. Set an example
The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that you must never try to force your children to do yoga. They will ultimately end up losing interest in it if they realize that they are being forced to participate. Instead of that, try to inspire them by setting an example. Kids tend to imitate their parents in everything so if you practice on a regular basis you will also start engaging themselves into it. Give them the scope to understand the benefits of yoga so that they can easily make it a habit without being forced to.
2. Enjoy the practicing sessions
Do not try to add perfection in your yoga session with children, even if it does not look like a proper yoga session. Let them enjoy the sessions so that they develop interest in it. You can laugh and verbally and physically interact with them. You can share stories with them which relates to the particular pose you are performing.
If your child shows reluctance to practice, you can invite them to climb around or even on you as you practice. It gives birth to a positive vibe between you two.
3. Make a routine
Practice makes a man perfect and the same theory applies to kids as well. That is why you must make yoga a part of your daily routine with flexible timings. You need to make sure that your child has a separate yoga mat and also make setting up the mat and cleaning up the area a part of the entire practice.
4. Collect some resources
There are many great books available for yoga from which you can draw inspiration from. For example the colorful and artistic books like Good morning Yoga and Good night Yoga are suitable practice-along storybooks that can easily become a part of your child’s wake up and bedtime habits. The deck of cards Yoga Pretzels is another resource which teaches yoga poses through drawings and descriptions as well as stories and ideas for games and activities that engage many children or larger group.
5. Enroll them in a class
If you notice that your kids really enjoy yoga sessions, enroll their names in a yoga class for kids. Some studios also offer classes with family where your entire family will be allowed to practice in a formal setting. You can also talk to the after classes about what they have learnt in the class.
Apart from these above mentioned points, you also need to take care of yourself and your baby’s yoga clothes. Purchase baby yoga clothes for your little ones so that they can perform yoga poses freely without any obstacle.
Involving your children in your Yoga sessions is a worthwhile endeavor because it helps maintain a balance among strength, flexibility and fun at the same time you can also show love towards yourself without being worried about your children.
